The temple is believed to be over 5,000 years old, housing a highly sacred idol of Lord Krishna made of *Pathalanjana Shila* (a rare stone with therapeutic properties). The deity is depicted with four arms, carrying the conch (Panchajanya), the discus (Sudarshana Chakra), the mace (Kaumodaki), and a lotus with a holy basil garland.
Beyond its religious importance, Guruvayur is a cultural epicenter of Kerala. It is renowned for hosting thousands of traditional weddings, classical dance forms like *Krishnanattam*, and retaining one of the largest elephant sanctuaries in the world.
